Review of Economagic: Economic Times Series Page, Choice, 37(9), May 2000.
This valuable site, created by Ted Bos of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, is a comprehensive collection of economic time series data gathered from U.S. and foreign governmental agencies, trade associations, and private companies. The more than 100,000 files include the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis' FRED database, employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the BEA's national and state income accounts, retail sales and building permits data from the Census Bureau, tax collection data from the IRS, and time series from the Bank of Canada, Bank of Japan, and the Central Bank of Europe. Data are indexed by source on the main page. The data is not annotated or described; the number of series in each resource is listed. Users may search for desired data. The data is available in tables, GIF and PDF charts, and, for subscribers, MS Excel spreadsheets. Subscribers have the ability to generate forecasts of the data. The site is fast loading although an ad for a general interest web site pops up with each page load. Highly recommended for teachers and students as a data source for lectures and research projects.
