Academic History & Motivation

I am a first year PhD student in College of Information Sciences and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University. Currently I am working with my advisor Prof. Xiaolong (Luke) Zhang. My research interests mainly focus on Human Computer Interaction especially Information Visualization.

Before joining IST, I got my my Bachelor of Engineering degree and Master of Science degree from Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2004 and 2007 respectively. After that from Fall 2007 to Spring 2008, I studied one year at School of Interactive Arts and Technology, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada.

I guess it is not difficult to explain what drove me to the subject of IST. I was first introduced to a computer at my age of 10, in 1991. During undergraduate and graduate period I studied 7 years on electronic engineering. Basically I am a personal closely dealing with what we now call "information technology". However, as time was getting closer to my master's graduation, I realized the problem that technology I learned before seems existing isolated from our common, everyday lives. I then became interested on how technology is influencing us, and how to direct technology from a user's perspective. This is what I am going to study here in IST. But hopefully I can find out some other interesting things during this process.
