EM SC 602 - Supervised Experience in College Teaching                                         05/17/2006 - 06/16/2006

This is a formal 600-level course (EM SC 602) which counts towards credits that focus on the process of teaching from an academic point of view. The course is teach by the College of Earth and Mineral Science, and is facilitated by Ann Luck, who does a fantastic job introducing graduate students in to the fundamentals of College Teaching.

The course is designed as an advanced course in college teaching, introducing graduate teaching assistants to the fundamentals of course design, development, delivery, assessment, and evaluation. The primary project for the course was the creation of an online teaching portfolio to present our work. Throughout the course we explored teaching and learning resources from across the University and "at large", gaining a better understanding of how the resources can be utilized as ongoing support mechanisms.

Among the major accomplishments of this course are how to write course goals and performance-based learning objectives, differentiate between assessment and evaluation techniques, how to develop learning activities, select course materials, including readings and instructional media, create a lesson plan, develop a course evaluation plan that will solicit student feedback to improve teaching and learning, develop and justify your personal teaching philosophy, etc. At the end of the semester we will build up our own Teaching Portfolio, which we can publish in your Penn State Personal Web Space. It is a great opportunity for us to develop our teaching philosophy and the teaching strategies that best suit our personality and style.


 

Penn State Course in College Teaching offered by the Schreyer Institute               06/06/2006 - 06/30/2006

This highly successful course combines the best elements of a teaching practicum with those of a seminar on pedagogy. The goal of the course is to develop the analytical and problem-solving skills that enable continued growth and development. Taught in a discussion format, this course gives us the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of good teaching, the design of classes and activities that motivate learning and evaluation of student learning. An important portion of the course is also focused on collecting feedback from students, as a tool for our improvement as a teacher. With assigned readings providing a common basis of theory and "expert" advice, participants share their own experiences and ideas, design and implement various instructional activities, and develop strategies for assessing teaching and learning. The impact of the course is evident in the number of participants who report changing the way they teach as a result of taking the course.

Perhaps the most significant aspect of this course is that it is open to anyone who teaches at the University, from TAs to senior faculty. Because we believe that teaching is a form of scholarship and thus (like all other elements of the profession) the subject of life-long learning, we start with the assumption that everyone has something to offer and something to learn. The result is an interdisciplinary and multigenerational community for teachers that is practical, supportive, and scholarly.


 

EGEE 602 - Supervised Experience in College Teaching                                            09/05/2006-12/15/2006

Supervised experience in teaching and orientation to other selected aspects of the profession at The Pennsylvania State University.  Activities in this course there will be designing and teaching of two class sessions; design and conduction of one problem solving session; assistance to the students in the development of computer projects and other assigned activities; grading computer projects; assist the instructor in preparing the exams.


 

ONE-DAY SEMINAR - Phishing: How to Avoid This E-Mail Attack              6/6/2006 10:00AM - 12:00PM

E-mail is currently the largest attack vector for phishing malware and ID theft exploits. This may change, as Web sites increasingly begin to employ advanced scripting techniques and automated functions; but e-mail is still the hands down winner. This is a short "hands-on" seminar help us create easily understandable standards for our communications which can go a long way in preventing a phishing attack and recovering quickly from one.
