COURSE WEBSPACE

Penn State ANGEL is used as the course webspace. Besides material posting by the instructor, ANGEL enables students to take a more active role in the learning process outside the class by taking the online quiz or participating in the discussion board. ANGEL mail and chat room are also very useful to communicate online with the instructor outside the classroom. In fact, as younger generation grows up with texting and online chatting, these communication features in ANGEL are popular alternatives to office hour meeting and really encourage the students to learn in the way which is most comfortable for them.

ANGEL course webspace is arranged in tabs, the main tab is the Lessons tab.  Inside the lesson tab there are folders that directs the students to the materials they are looking for, with subheading that gives information whether a solution or quiz has just been posted or when a quiz is due:

In the Calendar tab, students can see daily class schedule with reminder on homework, case study, quiz, or midterm, and daily textbook reading:

In the Resources tab, students can view the course announcement, calendar listing, and useful links to other websites:

One of ANGEL features that I find very useful is the file dropbox. Students can upload their assignment file in the dropbox and the instructor can set the dropbox to be hidden after the due date/time has passed.  I also use discussion board which is shown in more details in Communication page.

During the semester, I gave 4 online quizzes, typically on concepts that can be examined by multiple choice and true/false questions.  After the students submit the quiz, they will be shown their grades immediately and certain feedback will appear based on the answer they’ve chosen.

By maintaining the course grades on ANGEL, students are able to see their own grade and the average class grade for every assignment and test.
