The typical autobiography
will generally provide readers with all the same facts- name, birthday,
location where one was born and raised, major, and of course the hobbies.
However, since this is my website I want the readers to truly get a sense of
what kind of person I am and basically what motivates me and piques my
interest.
My parents are originally
from Thailand and came to the United States in pursuit of a better education
and overall, a better life style. Although they regard the United States as
their “home,” they still hold on to their traditional cultural and religious
values. I was born and raised in Southern California but throughout my
childhood, my parents ensured that I was continuously exposed to the Thai
culture and traditions. The continuous emphasis on my Thai identity
contributed to a great interest in Thailand and in general the entire global
community. Living in the United States, you tend to forget that there are
other countries out there and ignore events that take place beyond your
pre-established borders. Consequently, my cultural identity in many ways has
directed my attention to exploring and understanding the world, including
the diverse people, cultures, and religions, and way of life.
My passion is not only
confined to the complexity of the international community but it also
branches out into the field of communication. I have always been intrigued
by television news and the power it possesses over the construction of
reality, specifically in regards to foreign countries. Due to globalization,
international borders are slowly fading but this does not mean that the
general public can spontaneously travel to these foreign destinations.
Therefore, television is the window to these countries allows the audience
to not have to leave the comfort of their own homes. But how are news
organizations portraying the global community? Are they distorting the
story? What part of the world are we really seeing from this window? Are
domestic and international windows similar or different? Now, these are the
questions that continuously run through my mind and narrow my research focus
in my academic career. I haven’t found a concrete answer for these questions
and there is a possibility that I may never. I do know for sure that my list
of questions will not stop there but continue to grow as I discover more
topics that will pique my interest.
