Aspects of Strategies and Strategic Thinking

  • Involves more than just skillful performance - when one encounters an obstacle, he/she must go from an unconscious to conscious level and select and implement the appropriate remedies - moving from skillful performance to strategic thinking.
  • Needs to be nurtured - it is a learned and practiced process that requires planfulness, effort and persistence by the teacher and student.

Characteristics of Strategic Thinkers

  • Efficient and effective - completes task and has a good outcome.
  • Planful - mindful and reflective in problem solving
  • Possess good conditional knowledge - consider the strengths and weaknesses of various strategies.
  • Personalize and modify strategies.
  • Have a rich strategy repertoire
  • Invest and monitor performance
