Behaviorism
and cognitivism focused on individuals learning in isolation from others
and also ignored the impact that social contexts have on learning and
development. The old models of classroom management that were based
on these two theories have faded and have been replaced with models
that promote verbal exchanges and shared thinking between teachers and
students. Teachers now understand that is very important to build effective
learning environments that take advantage of the social and contextual
character of human learning and development.
Shared
learning mimizes competition between students and promotes shared intelligence.
Cognitive responsibilities are shared by the students, and stress is
lessened because of the peer support available.
