Motivation and Beliefs

Description

Description

Students' motivational beliefs are based on their beliefs about themselves as human
beings and as students. These beliefs include one's physical, academic, and
social aspects of self, and are part of their self-schemas.

Persons facing surprising or significant events react emotionally and cognitively as they try to fit these events into existing beliefs about themselves. Their reactions reveal their motivational state as well as their academic self-concept and future achievement.

Students attempt to make sense of academic events by taking credit or placing blame in accordance with their preconceptions of themselves as learners.
