Forms of Knowledge

Description

Description

Schooled (Knowledge)
vs
Unschooled (Beliefs)

  • Unschooled knowledge may be more tacit than schooled knowledge because we usually do not need to verbalize this knowledge.
  • Unschooled knowledge is usually diffuse and indescribable, it is more resistant to change than schooled knowledge.
  • If unschooled knowledge conflicts with schooled knowledge, one usually chooses the unschooled knowledge and forgets the schooled knowledge.

----------------------------------------------------------

Formal (Organized, like a class)
vs
Informal (Unplanned)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Tacit (Not in our consciousness)

vs
Explicit (In consciousness when activated)

  • Explicit knowledge is the primary focus of classroom learning - teachers are constantly brining knowledge to students awareness thorugh asking questions, engaging in discussion, etc.
  • Tacit knowledge may be either complex knowledge that one can't mentally grab a hold of it, or knowledge that one cannot express due to lack of language or concepts.
  • Even though tacit knowledge cannot be expressed, it is very infuential.
