I agree with this material. Good tips. I just want to add some tips from me, very basic.
I think that the biggest problem with Lose Weight is that people often do not continue doing
exercises or keeping diet. It is very much in our brain. We would like to have it flat but it is hard
to sacrifice for it. And even if one get it then often do not maintain it so after couple of
months everything is as before.

- Weight Loss Diet

Comment on "Why Should I Care?"

I think this is a great question that many organizations struggle with in accepting Social Media, and your answer may actually be hidden in your previous post about the CIC.

You mentioned that the struggle between personal and organizational entity when posting through these public feeds and creating a separation between the two. Maybe merging them as Cole suggested fixes this current problem. By adding a more personal touch and creating a hybrid of information stream and community/user interactivity it makes me, as a user, more interested in following you.

Show me a human side to the stream, and I trust it, engage it, and value it more in my every day feed. Think of Comcast and their team of specialists, they are an official mouthpiece for the Organization, but also add their touches of daily life or respond to messages I've posted that they find humorous, and it makes me interested.

I guess it goes back to the adage of you get what you give.

- kevinoshea

I think the idea that we *need* to pull apart our social and professional lives might be a fading trend. I think people are learning to navigate the social spaces better -- I don't think my facebook persona has much to do with my professional life. I know it is a part of the make up, but I really think the tide is turning with that. Twitter is a bit more complex, but as a rule I try fairly hard to be as consistent a persona as I can be in both real time, in my blog, and in Twitter. I am not all that radical in my comments and I rarely jump to extremes, so I don't feel like I am misrepresenting myself or my organization. I don't think there is a number that is too many, but I do think it is important to think very critically about who you are in a more holistic way. Who knows! In a few years we'll all have fractured online identities and no one will care what you say ... or maybe it'll be the opposite!

- Cole W.

I don't know what the best answer is either, Jeff. Who knows how these tools will evolve and what our response should or will be in the future? I have some bits of advice though:

1) Trust in your own ability to maintain a professional presence. By just being in these spaces and talking openly about your work you are building a reputation.

2) Don't be afraid to let your playful, personal side show either. If anything, with the nature of electronic media being kind of "cold" on its own I'd say this is as important as anything.

3) Hold on tight and enjoy the ride. :)

- Natalie Harp

I think you hit the rub. It's in the CMS industries best interest to keep as much status quo as possible. Think Blackboard the Utility. We in the academy however have the option to decide how much we want to buy in. Should be an interesting next few years.

- Jeff Swain

Thanks for the reply. When I think of global and the web I think along two planes: one, how now your tribe can consist of people from all over the world. The Web overcomes limitations of geography. This leads into the notion of "space" and how the web really obliterates the notion as I knew it.

Good openness is something I'll be writing about more. It's been bubbling up in the back of my mind for awhile now, probably started when I began working with the TLAs on developing a professional web-presence. Coffee sounds great.

- Jeff Swain

Finally, a tag search around here for "batman" yields a result! As for me, I'd guess that the CMS will evolve into something else (fairly easy prediction). It seems that is the natural way of things to evolve for morph. I think the biggest barrier will be from the business side. CMS companies have so much $$ invested in their current products, there is no way they move from them too quickly. Not until they feel they've gotten the return on investment they need to justify all that decision making they've been doing the last 10 years.

- MATTHEW N MEYER

Interesting path to walk to come to your conclusion. I like the notions of global you are exploring ... here is my only follow up question (and I *think* I know the answer) ... are you defining "global" as an overall awareness of the space that the web has created, or are you thinking of global as the physical world? I am sure you it is the former. I find it interesting (if that is indeed how you are using global) that we continue to choose terms that reflect very physical infrastructure and space when talking about the overwhelming potential that the Internet has provided us with. I am also struck by this sentence, "A digital scholar works toward the idea of good openness." That is something I wouldn't mind exploring more with you over a cup of coffee.

- Cole W.

This post really touched me for some reason. Other than the fact that I'm feeling emotionally affected by watching another episode of "Wide Angle" earlier, maybe I'm thinking about how my parents encouraged me (to put it mildly) to affirm my faith and get baptized at 14 (in my tradition you don't do that until you are "old enough" to confess your faith and make the commitment to join the church yourself). Good idea, except, well, I would challenge that 14 is old enough, at least in my case. Fortunately, I wasn't asked to make any heart-wrenching choices between God and my loved ones as you describe.

I'm not sure about Movable Type, but I know for WordPress and Drupal there are already ways to allow students to blog on their personal blogs and have the post show up in a class blog environment. This is happening at both UBC Blogs and UMW Blogs.
