126   Messiaen, Olivier. Quatre Études de rythme: “Île de feu I [no. 1]”; “Mode de valeurs et d’intensités [no. 2]”; “Neumes rythmiques [no. 3]”; Île de feu II [no. 4].” Nouvelle édition avec analyses du compositeur, français/anglais. Paris: Durand, 2000. M 25.M58 E84 2000 [no. 2]; M25.M58 E85 2000 [no. 3] ; M25.M58 E82 2000 [no. 4] (IUCAT).

This new edition of the Quatre Études de rythme contains analyses by Messiaen of each piece. Each analysis is accompanied by an anonymous English translation. Since Mode de valeurs was the only piece in the first edition of the Quatre Études to include a preface, a comparison is offered below of the two editions.

In the preface to this new edition . . . .  Unlike the preface to the first edition, . . . , this preface also includes an analysis of the work similar to that found in the third volume of the Traité´de rythme (see item 90). (The analyses of the  three other rhythmic etudes are likewise similar to those found in the Traité.) [END OF ANNOTATION]
