Sophomore Sara Neville has been named the winner of the Penn State Brandywine Undergraduate Research Award for 2009-2010.  Each year, one student from the campus is selected for excellence in undergraduate research.  Since Summer 2009, Sara has presented at three national conferences (one in DC on Capitol Hill) and been a lead author on a peer-reviewed journal presentation.  Her research focuses on the creation of a Google Earth QUEST - Questioning and Understanding Earth Science Themes.  Be sure to visit her website to view her creative accomplishments, and learn about her experiences through her blog that details The QUEST of an Undergraduate Researcher.

This award is a new award for the campus, with Sara being the second recipient.  The first recipient of the award was Schreyer Scholar Lindley Jones for her thesis work on the development of the International Charm jewelry line.

Congratulations, Sara!  (Sara received word that she won the award when she was in Washington DC, presenting at the Council on Undergraduate Research's Posters on the Hill event.)

Penn in Hand is Penn State Brandywine's literary magazine.  Published once a year, Penn in Hand contains poems, short stories, essays, artwork, and photography submitted by Penn State students, staff and faculty.

Two honors scholars were recognized for their outstanding contributions to Penn in Hand.  Benjamin Bean was selected as the second place poetry winner for his entry, "Quiet."  Lavanya Mookerjee was selected as the third place poetry winner for her entry, "Of Kaleidoscopes and Time."

Congratulations, Ben and Lavanya!

Writing and defending her Schreyer Honors thesis was not the end of celebrating her research accomplishments.  Fall 2009 graduate Dana Gibson (pictured below) presented her research, "'Am I Your Slave?': William Parker and The Freedman's Story," at the Mid-Atlantic American Studies Association Conference in March 2010.  The surprise for her at the conference was the announcement that she was selected as the winner of MASSA's Undergraduate Roundtable Best Undergraduate Essay award.

Congratulations, Dana, for this significant achievement!  Please click here to read the news announcement about her award.

Sophomore Matt Bachman, a civil engineering major and honors scholar at Penn State Brandywine, found he has a talent he never imagined: writing. Matt submitted an essay that was accepted for publication in Penn State University's annual journal, Best of Freshman Writing, Volume 14.

"I was surprised but really happy when I got the e-mail," Matt, of Newark, Del., said of his essay titled, "The United States' Failure to Sign the Rights of the Child" making the cut. "I always liked writing and I hear a lot of engineers struggle with it so we'll see how that works out for me."

On choosing such an important and serious topic, Matt said he had never heard of the United Nations' treaty his essay was based on until he was asked to research it for a one-credit library studies course required for all honors students. When asked to write an essay for ENGL 030, Mattndecided to revisit the topic, not realizing so many people would find his thoughts so compelling.

Campus Schreyer Scholars Adrienne Showalter and Dana Gibson have been invited to join the prestigious national honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Standards for election are extremely high. Membership is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of second-semester juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors in their college. Because Phi Kappa Phi is highly selective, membership is a stamp of excellence that is recognized by graduate and professional school admissions committees and employers alike.

The traditions of Phi Kappa Phi at Penn State are long-standing; as Penn State joined the Universities of Maine and Tennessee in 1900 to establish the society as a national society. Penn State University became the third chapter of the society. Phi Kappa Phi holds the distinction of being the oldest honorary society that recognizes excellence in all recognized branches of academic endeavor at Penn State University.

Congratulations, Adrienne and Dana!
Dr. Laura Guertin was honored with a U.S. Congressional Citation by U.S. Representative Joe Sestak for her volunteering and civic engagement work at Penn State Brandywine and in the local community, especially in connection with the 40 Acts of Kindness and Civic Engagement (see Penn State Live story). Dr. Guertin was then able to film a short conversation with the Congressman in the Digital Commons about civic engagement and the responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society.

Eric A. & Josephine S. Walker Award went to honors scholar Alyce DiLauro.  This award is given annually to full-time undergraduate students from each of the campus locations.  The Walker Award recognizes a student whose outstanding qualities of character, scholarship, leadership, and citizenship have been directed into programs and services that have positively influenced fellow students.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni. The traditions of Phi Kappa Phi at Penn State are long-standing; as Penn State joined the Universities of Maine and Tennessee in 1900 to establish the society as a national society.

Penn State University became the third chapter of the society.
