Workshop

511. Establishing and Sustaining an Undergraduate Research Program: A Professional Development Workshop for New and Future Faculty.
Sat., 30 Oct., 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Fee: US$50; includes continental breakfast and lunch. Limit: 30. CEU: 0.9.
Cosponsor: Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).

Abstract: This workshop is for faculty and postdoctoral scientists/graduate students. Topics in the morning will focus on establishing a research program with undergraduates (integrating research practices into the classroom, effective approaches to mentoring undergraduate researchers, identifying funding sources). Topics in the afternoon will focus on sustaining an undergraduate research program (maintaining research continuity and productivity, recruiting and mentoring researchers, balancing teaching and research, funding). Based on the demographics of our participants, we may also include information on how to get a job at an academic institution (primarily undergraduate). Participants may join for either half of the workshop or for the full day.

The agenda of the GeoCUR faculty development workshop is divided into presentations by workshop facilitators and break-out sessions to encourage small-group discussion.  This workshop is offered frequently at GSA and AGU annual meetings.

The presentations include:

How to get a job a at PUI - This presentation, summarizing information from Bushey et al. (2001) is useful for those looking for an academic job as well as faculty who may be involved in search committees.  The information covered includes:  things to do before the job search, how to tailor letters of application and statements of teaching/research philosophy for a PUI; the interview process; tips for final negotiations once a job offer has been made.

Involving Undergraduates in Research - Typical topics covered include:  research activities embedded within courses; student-initiated vs. faculty-initiated research projects; determining the appropriate scope for individual undergraduate projects; mentoring students in collaborative research projects, academic year vs. summer research with undergraduates.

Funding Your Research - These presentations involve identifying funding sources as well as information on specific funding sources.  The GeoCUR workshops have always included presentations by current or former NSF DUE-Geo program officers covering the appropriate funding opportunities within the NSF. In addition, there have usually been presentations on funding opportunities from the Petroleum Research Fund (PRF).  Longer workshops also include presentations on proposal writing.

Sustaining Your Research - Typical topics include: establishing research collaborations beyond the campus; navigating mid-career changes in research direction.

Break-out sessions related to each of the topics are included in each workshop to allow participants time to engage in more extended conversations with workshop facilitators and other participants.  Depending on the length of the workshop (half- vs. full-day), there may be more than one break-out session to allow participants to interact in small groups with more than one presenter during the course of the workshop.  The break-out sessions allow for faculty to reflect upon their current practices and evaluate their future goals and solicit feedback from the facilitators for implementation.
