Compare Web Pages with Printed Materials

What makes web pages different from traditional printed materials? 
 
  • In keeping with your own research interest, choose a topic. Then find both a web site and a printed article related to the topic.
  • Identify both pieces of information sources.
    • Who is the author?
    • What is the date of publication?
    • Who is the publisher?
    • Is this information an orginal publication or not?
  • Examine the organizational elements.
    • In what formats is the information presented?
    • How is the information structured?
  • Go to the discussion site.  Share ideas.
    • While identifying the information source, do you encounter any difficulty?  What kinds of difficulties?
    • What elements are the most distinguishing characteristics of each source?
    • How are thses characteristics different, and how are they similar?

Joan Ormondroyed, Michael Engle and Tony Cosgrave (1996) have given a basic idea about what aspects of information should be analyzed.  After reading the article, look at the differences between the web pages and traditional printed materials that you find out and think about whether the diferences will make the evaluation of the two sources different?  Are some aspects more important to one than the other?  Send me your thoughts.
