  Reference Letter Tips

  • Solicit letters from people who know you and/or your work personally:
    • Instructors, supervisors, owners, presidents, and guests
  • Request your letter of recommendation in writing long before you need it.
  • Start with courtesy and manners:
    • say please & thank you frequently
  • Tell the person the purpose of your recommendation:
    • document your performance, your portfolio, graduate school, a job
  • Provide then with skills or attributes and traits you want addressed.
