Jim took this photo of Kurt Gries and me at our campsite on a small island in the middle of the Togiak river. The three of us had spent all day in the skiff trying to get up to Togiak Lake, but the water was so low that dry summer that we constantly had to get out to pull the skiff. Not long after this photo was taken, a big grizzly stood up on the river bank (the grass right behind us) and roared at us. We all slept with one eye open that night. |
