TODAY'S EPISODE: WOMEN'S CLOTHING (OR LACK THERE OF)
|
The weather is finally getting nice here in Happy Valley, PA and the scenery around campus is changing as it often does this time of year. The sunny weather brings out the sunbathers to green spaces around campus and of course the lack of clothing is becoming very apparent, especially with the young female population. Being a typical male, I tend to enjoy watching almost nude college girls parade around campus without a care in the world; however I often wonder who they are trying to impress. Sure they're nice to look at and, ok, ogle, but I guarantee that the moment one of us guys says something about, or looks incorrectly at, what they're wearing, or not wearing as the case may be, we'd be slapped with a sexual harassment suit so fast it'd make your eyes pop! It's like the stereotypical construction workers on their lunch breaks whistling at a scantily clad young lady walking down the sidewalk; naturally the woman is disgusted and storms off in a huff.
Ever notice that it doesn't work the other way though? Remember the soft drink commercial where several women in an office building drool over the shirtless construction workers across the street? Ok, so the gist of the commercial is that the ladies are actually ogling the Coke, but that's not the point. The underlying message is guys like to be looked at as masculine he-men and have beautiful women snuggle up close and rub their massive chests. Maybe I'm reading into that too much, but on the other end of the spectrum, a woman who is practically bursting out of a tiny, frilly tube top and tight, high-cut shorts that almost leave nothing to the imagination, will be the first to claim that men are pigs when she is drooled at by a group of guys in an office building across the street, assuming they're not just looking at her Coke.
"Look at me, but don't touch me or talk to me, and for that matter don't even look at me." That seems to be the message that is being conveyed. If that's the case, what's the point? If it's to tease, then it's working, but not all men appreciate that and women often find themselves in peril because of it. I'd think it'd be interesting to survey rape and sexual assault victims and find out exactly what they were doing to provoke an attack. Yes, I know that sometimes sick minded individuals will pick the first female that comes along to have their way with and sure some even use drugs to get what they want, but what I'd like to know is was the victim leading the guy on? What was the victim wearing at the time? Most of the time reports will indicate that attacks are unprovoked and the female did nothing wrong. Think about it though, would a woman actually blame herself for getting rapped? Not likely. Nine out of ten times it's the male that takes the punishment for the crime.
Most men have a one track mind, whether they want to admit it or not. "Hot" clothing compounds the problem and that little filter that we have in our heads tends to disappear when we see something that we like. Granted some of those filters are stronger than others, but most of the time, unless the guy is dead, sooner or later, no matter how strong he is, the filter will fail and he'll find himself up the proverbial creek without a paddle because some fine young thing has clad herself in attire that would make a prostitute look like a diplomat!
There's a photo circulating on the Internet of a ravishing brunette in tight shorts and an equally small shirt, provocatively standing on a bridge overlooking some water and a beautiful sunset. A few yards down the road is the remains of a sports car that has careened into the concrete barrier at the side of the road. Obviously the driver had his mind on something else and it would be a safe bet to assume that it was not the sunset! The photo could have been altered, but I have seen guys practically wreck their vehicles because their eyes are glued to a pair of bulging bosoms or a tenacious tushy.
I think this country needs a dress code. I'm not advocating that all women cover up with heavy robes as they do in other countries, but a little more modesty would not be a bad thing. Whatever happened to the long dresses and frilly dress blouses of yesteryear? If you're great-grandfather were alive, you could ask him about seeing a piece of ankle in his day! Talk about sexy! Now it's not uncommon to see the entire ankle, calf, knee, thigh and other more northern points on the body. Perhaps it's a good thing great-grandpa is no longer living; he'd keel over dead if he saw what's considered sexy today! I remember a story in the news recently about a young teenage girl in Washington State who sued, or threatened to sue, a large women's clothing retailer because they didn't carry any "normal" clothing. Normal clothing was described as anything that did not make her look like a cheap hooker. And that's true everywhere. Look around at any major clothing stores and find an outfit a woman can breathe in!
So maybe it's not that young women want to dress in tight clothes, it's just that today's fashions are governed by a generation of anorexic super models who have adopted the "look but don't touch" or "I've got it and I'll flaunt it, but don't dare look at me" mentality as the norm. I'm fortunate to be married to a terrific woman who is not caught up in the trends of the day and is happier in a frumpy old sweat suit than a pair of skin tight leather pants. Not that she wouldn't look hot in a skin tight pair of leather pants mind you, she just wouldn't be comfortable. However, if she were to ever own a pair, they'd be for private use only and wouldn't stay on very long. 'Scuse me while I veer off the road and crash into a tree...
