Internal Funding Opportunities and Awards for Graduate Students
Internal Funding opportunities for CMLIT students are available from four main sources:

Fellowships and Grants for Study
Dissertation
Support - For support of research-related expenditures associated with a
dissertation or for release time.
(March 15 Application Deadline)
Humanities
Initiative - To expand support for dissertation writers providing releases
from teaching or related service to humanities students who are supported on
assistantships.
(March 1 Deadline)
Travel Support - This program enables graduate students to present results from their research at the leading professinal conference in their field and to present creative work in professional venues. Students who wish to apply for a travel grant should contact their department.
IAH Summer
Residency Program - Provides advanced students the opportunity to devote a
summer session to work on their thesis, dissertation or final creative
project.

Summer Tuition Assistance Program - Provides tuition assistance to
graduate students for a summer session.

Doctoral Research
Fellowship Application Incentive Award - Provides awards to students who
have successfully submitted an application to an external doctoral research
fellowship program.
(Rolling Submission July 1, 2006 to May 1, 2007, filled
on first-come, first served)
National Science Foundation - Fellowship Application Incentive Award -
Provides awards to students who have successfully submitted an application to
the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

Academic Computing
Fellowship - The program is for doctoral students who have a background
and strong interest in computing applications and who will help develop and
disseminate new methods for problem solving within their disciplines.

External Research Support - this link will direct you to potential funding sources; numerous Internet-based informational services and databases; software; funding priorities and recent awards made by private sector sponsors.
Offfice of Student Aid - Provides information about available aid programs, applying for student financial aid, and costs.
Awards for Teaching, Research and for Dissertations
Award for Research Excellence - Recognizes high quality contributions to the humanities and the social sciences (March 15 Application Deadline)
Alumni Association Dissertation Award - provides funding and recognition to outstanding full-time doctoral students and is considered to be among the most prestigious available to Penn State graduate students that recognizes outstanding achievement in scholarship and professional accomplishment. (October 26 Application Deadline)
Graduate Assistant
Outstanding Teaching Award - Recognize and reward graduate assistants for
outstanding teaching performance.
(November 1 Application Deadline)
Graduate School Teaching Certificate - Recognition of students commitment to college teaching that will provide an avenue to enhance their teaching skills.

Horton/Custard Funds
These funds endowed in the Department of Comparative Literature are used to support travel to conferences. In general, the department attempts to support the travel of graduate students making normal progress to present papers at professional conferences. Assuming normal departmental finances, The level of support is as follows:
$150 for a regional or "theme" conference;
$250 for a national or international conference of a MAJOR organization in the student's field;
$350 for the three "key" conferences (ACLA, ICLA, and MLA).
Students will submit their requests for funding, together with proof of acceptance of their conference papers and a copy of their abstract to the Graduate Director by the following deadlines: 15 September; 1 December; 15 March, for conferences taking place AFTER each deadline. Travel Grants for Graduate Students
These RGSO funds (see above) are
administered through the department specifically for travel to conferences.
Selection process: Same as the Horton/Custard Funds, but students should provide
an explanation of the importance of the conference for their dissertation or
career plans. Amount awarded varies according to number of qualified applicants,
but will be approximately twice the amount of the Horton/Custard Funds.
Summer Session Funds for Support of Graduate Students
Students may be eligible for teaching during summer session for roughly $2000 per course. Selection process: students fill out a teaching request form. A variety of factors are considered by the Graduate Committee in filling the limited number of sections offered.
Erasmus Awards
These awards recognize teacher or advisors who inspire students to continue their study of literature. Candidates are nominated by new undergraduate majors in the department of Comparative Literature.
Bayard Award
This is awarded in the Spring semester to one or two advanced graduate students who have distinguished themselves during the course of their program . There is no application process.
Job Market Financial Support
Students who have completed all requirements for mock interviews are eligible for departmental financial support in the job search process. We will pay the cost of mailing your job applications (job letter, CV, writing sample). Students who have an interview at MLA are also eligible for financial support to offset travel expenses.
