Haibane Renmei (灰羽連盟) is the latest anime from Yoshitoshi ABe. Other works of ABe are Serial Experiments Lain and Niea Under 7.
灰【はい】 Ash
羽【はね】 feather, plume, wing
灰羽 Haibane means something like Ashwings
連盟 【れんめい】 Renmei means league, union, or alliance

The original concept of CFF was developed in a Doujinshi done by ABe

People who managed to get their hand on ABe's artbook Essence were able to see some ashwinged people for quite a bit. Including the cover image. Places like Barnes & Noble sell it (if they have it in stock). One could get Essence and other artbooks of ABe if Fanboy Entertainment, Inc. (who is publishing Essence here in the states) ever gets their site back up.
Haibane Renmei began to air October of 2002. and will with out a doubt be brought to the US by Pioneer.
