Phillip Manning

Graduate Research Assistant

I am currently a graduate student at the Pennsylvania State University in the School of Forest Resources working towards a Master's of Science in Forest Resources.  Once my academic studies are completed, I hope to become an integral part of natural resource management within Pennsylvania.

My academic interests include both wildlife science and forest management.  I am currently a member of both the Wildlife Society and the Society of American Foresters.  My professional experience in the two fields, detailed in their respective pages, includes my extensive internship with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and my position as a research assistant with Penn State University.  I am also involved in working with computer programming to aide in natural resource management.  My computer program, 3pCruise, which can be found under my publications page, was developed using Liberty Basic (originally) for performing and analyzing timber cruises using 3P sampling.  Developing 3pCruise has lead to my learning more sophisticated programming software such as Microsoft Visual Basic.

My time at Penn State has not been all academic related.  I spend the majority of my free time in the outdoors.  I enjoy fly-fishing local streams such as Spring Creek and Penns Creek, and I also enjoy hunting various species throughout the year.  My love of the outdoors has stemmed from early childhood and has, in large part, lead to my career path in natural resource management
