[123] He came to this country with his family - tradition has it about 1634, but there are no records until 1640. He has a yoeman and husbandman and owned a large acreage in Salem Village which
property was around what is now Summer Street and John Greenleaf Whittier is supposed to have once lived in the original Putnam House. He is said to have been a staunch Protestant.
