Designing and Building a Model

Guided Discovery

Methods Lesson Plan
1.  task

To learn how to construct a snap-tight model airplane

Given a snap-tight model airplane, have the learners construct the model with only the picture of the model to guide them.

2.  formulate detailed instructions Have the learners discuss and write down the instructions they went through to complete the model, identify the hidden logical structure of the task. Use a flow chart or diagram, if necessary.
3.  apply discovered method Have the learners complete a model again, step-by-step, using their instructions, making changes as needed.
4.  internalize method Have the learners complete a model again, without using the written instructions.
5.  automatize method Have the learners complete a model as quickly as possible without thinking specifically about each step.
first generalization Repeat steps 1-5.  To learn how to construct a more complex prefabricated model airplane
second generalization Repeat steps 1-5.  To learn how to construct an originally designed model airplane

Expository Teaching

Combination Approach

Methods Lesson Plan
For the first task use the Discovery Learning Approach Steps 1-5 under Discovery Learning.
For first generalization use the Expository Teaching Approach. Steps 1-5 under Expository Teaching.
For second generalization use the Discovery Learning Approach. Steps 1-5 under Discovery Learning.
