Accomplishments, Awards, and Fellowships

National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University of South Florida (May 2009 – July 2009)

  • Description of Program The centerpiece of the program was an intensive, interdisciplinary research experience where each student actively engaged in a faculty-mentored research project focused on hurricane hazards and social vulnerabilities of individuals and communities. As a capstone experience, students showcased their research projects at a university-community symposium held at the end of the nine-week session.
  • Research Topic – Evaluation of Community Emergency Response Teams in Hillsborough County, Florida: A Pilot Study.

Meteorology 415 (Forecasting Practicum) Fall 2009 Forecasting Competitions

  • First Place – Highest overall accuracy in forecasting the weather (which included temperature, dew point, amount/percentage of precipitation, wind speed/direction, cloud cover, and visibility) for various selected cities across the United States over a one-month span among a large group of meteorology students.
  • Second PlaceSecond highest overall accuracy in forecasting the weather for various selected cities across the World over a two-month span.

Meteorology 411 (Synoptic Meteorology) Fall 2008 Forecasting Competition

  • First Place – Highest overall accuracy in forecasting the weather (temperature/precipitation) for State College, PA over a 16 – week span. Over 40 meteorology students were involved in the competition.

High School Science Fair Competition

  • First Place - Environmental Science category from 2002 to 2006 at school and district levels.
  • Third Place – Houston Metropolitan Area Competition in 2003 (Cold Front Dynamics/Prediction)
  • Participant – Houston Metropolitan Area Competition from 2002 to 2006.

Completion of SKYWARN Spotter Training Course

  • Tampa Bay National Weather Service Received training to effectively report wind gusts, hail size, rainfall, and cloud formations that could signal a developing tornado.

Work / Internship Experience

BROADCASTER/FORECASTER, Penn State Campus Weather Service – Univ. Park, PA
September 2006 – Present (Weekly)

  • Recorded national weather forecasts and created graphics for on-air segments.
  • Produced radio forecasts describing expected conditions for the upcoming week to various clients and created short and mid-range forecasts for various regions of Pennsylvania. 

INTERN, WFLA-NBC News Channel 8 – Tampa, FL
May 2008 – August 2008 (Weekly)

  • Worked with WSI TrueView Sky 5.5 software creating and editing slides that were used during evening broadcasts.
  • Gained valuable experience practicing forecasts regularly in front of the chroma key.
  • Forecasted for various locations within the western coast of Florida. Those forecasts were then sent to clients and e-mail subscribers with current weather alerts and predicted conditions for the next couple days.
  • Assisted The Tampa Tribune with forecasting conditions for numerous locations within the western coast of Florida as well as submitting a 7-day forecast for the city of Tampa.

INTERN, 2-1-1 Tampa Bay Cares – Clearwater, FL

  • Served as the Disaster Preparedness Resource Assistant.
  • Created a disaster preparedness workshop for the company.
  • Designed a helpful and informative presentation explaining ways in which residents can protect themselves for when the next major hurricane strikes the Tampa Bay area.

INTERN, National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Office – Dickinson, TX
May 2004 – August 2004 (Weekly)

  • Created and produced forecasts for the Galveston/Houston area with other meteorologists.
  • Participated in tropical weather discussions and generated forecasts for hurricanes that threatened the United States (at that time).
