Methods.
Plant material:
1 yr-old, bare-root seedlings were obtained for all species except for box elder, which was started from cuttings in early spring before the growing season.
- Plants used for construction cost were grown in mesh bags at Rock Springs Experimental Station. Plants used for all other measurements were chamber-grown in autoclaved sand and fertilized with a 10% modified-Hoagland’s solution.
Measurements:
Root length and diameter were obtained through imaging with a video camera and analyzing images with Dt-scan software (fig. 1)--click to see figure.
Construction cost was calculated by the Mc Dermitt & Loomis (1981) method from elemental analysis determined with a Fisons Instruments EA 1108 CHNS-O analyzer (fig. 2)--click to see figure.
Respiration was determined with a Hanstech Clark-type oxygen electrode from excised roots (fig. 3)--click to see figure.
P uptake was determined with 32P labeling (fig. 4)--click to see figure.
