Planning Commission

Local planning commissions are made up of community members appointed by the local municipal government. The planning commission serves to advise the municipal government on growth management forecasts, goals and strategies. The planning commissions in the Bellefonte Borough and Walker Township are actively participating in helping to develop the comprehensive plans.

Zoning Hearing Board

Zoning hearing board members are appointed by the local municipal government to advise on local land use. Since municipalities are required to provide for every type of land use, the zoning hearing board serves an important role on exactly where and how specific land will be used. The zoning hearing board is an important arm of municipal government, critical to determining how closely the municipality follows their comprehensive plan.

Preservation Planning

Preservation planning includes bodies such as a historical architectural review board. This type of municipal body is key to guiding and enforcing regulations governing use and design of
structures in designated historic districts and properties. These bodies are sanctioned by the state government and play an important role in preserving the heritage and character of the municipality. Preservation planning in Bellefonte Borough is key to the success of their comprehensive plan. Preservation planning is known to be used in at least one other Centre County community, the village of Boalsburg in Harris Township.
