History
The Penn State Berks Lehigh-Valley Blue Lions Ice Hockey Club has been in existence for six years. The club started out as a vision of a few students interested in starting an on-campus ice hockey team. The student athletes felt that the Berks' area adult leagues were not competitive enough.
The students approached the Student Government Association (SGA) for funding, and six years later, the club is one of the most successful on campus. The original league the Blue Lions played in was comprised of five Allentown area colleges. The Blue Lions won the Allentown league championship their first year, and were runners-up their second.
Because the club outgrew the competition level, the Blue Lions joined the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) in the 2000-2001 season. The DVCHC is comprised of two men's and one women's division. Teams in the Blue Lions division include East Stroudsburg U, Kutztown, Muhlenberg, PSU Delco, Rowan, Rutgers, Shippensburg, and Widener.
Since joining the DVCHC, the Blue Lions also became members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Members of the ACHA are nationally ranked according to their records and difficulty of schedule allowing teams to be ranked for playoffs.
In the 2002 - 2003 season Penn State Berks won the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) Championship!!! That same year Penn State Berks was one of 16 teams out of 79 ACHA Division III schools that was invited to the "2002 - 2003 National Division III Championship". Penn State finished 8th overall in the "2002 - 2003 National Division III Championship". This was a huge season under first year coach Sandy Cohen, assistances Tom Galambos, Nick Erjavec and Penn State Berks Student Advisor Mike Kane.
In the 2003 - 2004 season Penn State Berks won the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) Championship!!! for the second straight year. Penn State Berks, again was one of 16 teams out of 76 ACHA Division III schools that was invited to the "2003 - 2004 National Division III Championship". Penn State finished 13th overall in the "National Division III Championship". Penn State Berks underwent a complete change in Coaching and their Student Advisors. The changes were not even noticed. Under coach's Eric McCambly and assistant Nick Erjavec they continued their winning ways. The team owes a great debt of gratitude to Ken Green and Rich Pawling who stepped up an volunteered as Student Advisors. Without them the team would not exist.
The team plays its home games just a few minutes from campus at the new Body Zone complex. Body Zone is located off of Paper Mill Road right behind the Turkey Hill mini-mart. Attendance is free.
