GEOG 121 Project 2b:

| The locations on the map represent the
different waypoints that we located on campus using our GPS receiver.
Each red point (clockwise from top) is as follows: Front of Pattee Library,
HUB Lawn, Main Gates at College & Allen, and the entrance to Walker
Building.
Our group learned how to use the GPS receivers in advance so this project was a little easier for us than the rest of the class. We imported the latitude and longitude coordinates from a worksheet into the GPS receiver and set them as 'waypoints.' Then, we used the tracking and 'nearest waypoint' features to find our first and subsequent locations. After we found each waypoint, we marked it off on a campus map. When we came back to the computer lab, we copied the geographic coordinates into Excel and then saved it as a *.csv file. Then, using the Waypoint+ software in the computer lab, we imported the document and a shape file of the campus map into the ArcMap software, and superimposed the data points onto the map. After adjusting some colors to make it more aesthetically appealing, the above map was achieved! I found this project to be very worthwhile, as I had never used a GPS receiver before. It was definitely easier for us than the other students since we prepared a presentation and did research on it before coming to class. I feel more comfortable with my future coursework in geography now that I learned how to use a GPS receiver. Equipment/software used: Garmin GPS 12 receiver; Microsoft Excel, Waypoint+, ArcGIS ArcMap 9. |
