Nittanytown 911 System:  Digitizing Roads

User Instructions - Digitizing and Completing the Input Form

OVERVIEW

These instructions will illustrate how to digitize roads as line features within the Roads layer of your map, and explain the proper methods of input for using the 911 System input form.  Please read through all of the following instructions carefully in order to avoid generating input errors in ArcMap.

INSTRUCTIONS

A.  Digitizing Roads in ArcMap in the Roads Layer

In this section, you will learn the proper digitizing and data input sequence for the process of adding streets to the Nittanytown map.

            1.  Activate the Editor Toolbar by selecting Tools >> Customize and checking the ‘Editor’ Toolbar if not already done so.

            2.  Choose ‘Start Editing’ from the Editor Toolbar.  Be sure to select the Nittanytown Geodatabase as the source, and click ‘OK

            3.  Click ‘Start Editing’ in the next window.  Be sure to select the Sketch Tool from the Editor toolbar.

            4.  Click the point at which you wish you begin creating the road, and drag the sketch tool where appropriate to create the road.  Single-click to create a vertex at any point, and continue.

            5.  When the last vertex is reached, single-click, then right-click and select ‘Finish Sketch

            6.  Notice the road you just created is currently selected.  Without saving the edits, find the ‘Open_911Form’ button and single-click to open the form.

B.  Entering Attribute Table Data Through Nittanytown 911 System Form

            1.  After opening the form, enter a username between 1 and 10 characters, but no more than 10.  Click ‘OK’ once entered.

            2.  You will see the Nittanytown 911 System Form open.  Input the according road data as you see in the form.  (Data entry requirements are listed below, please adhere to these specifications!)

            3.  Click ‘Commit.’ You will see a message box if any of your entered data does not meet the system’s requirements.  If so, change your data accordingly and proceed.

            4.  Once you have done this, you will receive a message confirming that your data was updated successfully.  To digitize additional roads, please step back to Part A, Step 4 and proceed through the steps as before.

(If at any time, you wish to save your edits as you go, click on the ‘Editor’ button and click ‘Save Edits,’ and proceed as normal.)

            5.  When you have completed digitizing your roads and entering the relevant attribute data for each one, single-click the ‘Quit’ button on the form.

            6.  At this point, you should save your edits, and close out of the editing session. Again, to do so, go to the Editor Toolbar and either click ‘Save Edits’ and then ‘Stop Editing,’ or simply click ‘Stop Editing’ and select ‘Yes’ when prompted to save your edits.

Congratulations!  You have finished digitizing roads and inputting address data for the Nittanytown 911 System.
