Introduction: What is linguistics?

Unit 2: What is phonology?

Unit 3: What is morphology?

I am currently designing LING 100 "Foundation of Linguistics," an online course for the Pennsylvania State University's Program in Linguistics.

This course, formerly only available in the traditional, classroom-only format, will be available beginning Summer 2009 from the WorldCampus.

In an online course, students still meet deadlines and are tested on material, but they are able to work at their own pace, review material as often as needed, and fit a university course into their schedule.

In the LING 100 course, students view presentations weekly (see links on the left) and follow along with assigned readings, just as in a traditional class. However, students who take LING 100 online also contribute to discussion forums that force students to apply course concepts to situations involving real language - their own language! Students also watch short videos of Penn State students from around the world describing their own languages (I will post a sample of these recordings - check back soon!).

The course will explore theoretical linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics) and will additionally apply associated concepts to language variation, language and society, language acquisition, language change, and psycholinguistics.
