Sediment Sediment is a collection of transported fragments (detrital) or precipitated materials (chemical) that accumulate in loose layers. Detrital sediment is made up of fragments of preexisting igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. To see how detrital sediment is transported and deposited, try this activity. Chemical sediment is composed of minerals that were previously dissolved in water, but have been left behind when the water evaporated. To see how chemical sediment is transported and deposited, try this activity.
