Changing What it Means to be Blind
Founded in 1940, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) has since grown to be the largest and most influential non profit organization of blind persons to date. The NFB opens doors to information, fellowship, and new activities for all blind and visually impaired persons. NFB membership provides a common meeting ground and, more importantly, a sense of community, of participation and of confidence.
Our Happy Valley Chapter serves persons of any age and visual acuity in both Blair and Centre Counties, including those of the Penn State Campus Community, who may need help as they strive for Independence and as they work toward attaining their professional and personal goals.
As an organization, we all work together to combat the real problems of blindness: the misconceptions and lack of information about it. Our overall goal is the complete integration of the blind into society on a basis of equality. We do this by bringing blind people together to share successes, to offer support to help our members succeed, and to create solutions to the challenges of legal, economical, and social discrimination. We solemnly believe that if a blind person has the proper training, a lack of eyesight is reduced to merely a physical annoyance. Doors are then opened to a whole realm of possibilities that are only limited by one’s imagination.
