 Rules and Scoring

       ► Rules of Play, 2011
       ► Example Scoring
       ► Back 9 Adjustments

Rules of Play:
  • General Rules:

    • Only Toftrees members and golf staff may play
    • USGA rules of play generally apply; summer rules everywhere; play it as it lies
    • Subs are ineligible for weekly games
    • Makeup matches can only be played the week prior to the scheduled match

  • The League Game: (see example card below)

    • 2-man teams, match play, high/low
    • 2-points per hole at most
    • 1 pt. best net low ball; 1 pt. best net high ball; no points for ties
    • One substitute per team is permitted, or
    • A player can play a match without his partner or a sub
      (1 against 2, or 1 against 1; best-ball)

  • Handicapping:

    • Players will use "League" posted handicaps as basis
    • Players will use 100% of "Club" posted handicap if a "League" handicap is not available
    • Players without a handicap, must play as "scratch"
    • If you play a match on the back nine, you only get the same number of holes as the front 9
    • Players should subtract lowest handicap of the foursome from their own handicap to determine strokes

  • Scoring

    • Please use last names on the scorecard
    • Score cards must be turned in, indicating which team won and on which hole
    • Please indicate who kept score
    • A League Score will be computed using equitable stroke control (ESC) and unplayed hole rules
    • League scores will then be used to compute League Handicaps
    • 10 artifical scores (new players) will be replaced with your first 10 adjusted League scores
    • The lowest 6 of the last 10 scores are used for handicapping

  • Local Rules:

    • Rule exceptions will be noted each week, if necessary
    • Embedded ball rule, through the green
    • You may play out of turn except on the putting green
    • Cell phones must be in silent mode

Example

Notes:

  • The match handicaps I post on the day of play are your 100% League handicaps.
  • The lowest handicap in the match is subtracted from all players handicap's for match purposes. This is your playing handicap for the day.
  • You get strokes on holes whose handicap number is less than or equal to your playing handicap.

In this example the "match handicaps" are determined by subtracting 5 (Zierke's handicap) from everyone else's handicap and then marking the holes () on the card accordingly.

    Back 9 Adjustment

There are adjustments to be made so that players get strokes on the same "number" of holes regardless of which 9 they are playing. But, the handicap numbers on the front 9 are all even 2, 4, 6, ... and the back 9 are all odd 1, 3, 5, ... This can be done 1 of 2 ways:

  • After subtracting off the low handicap, subtract 1 more from everyone's playing handicap. In the example above, the normal subtraction results in strokes: 6, 5, 0 and 5. So adjust these to: 5, 4, -1, 4 and then mark the card

    Or, ...

  • Apply the normal playing handicap subtraction, resulting in 6, 5, 0 and 5. But add 1 to "each" of the hole handicap assignments on the back-9 (making them all even again) before you mark the card.
