  • Overview of Posting Scores for USGA Handicaps

    To Our Members:

In order to have equity in tournaments and in particular our men's league, it is imperative that each individual golfer record his/her acceptable scores. Below you will find a brief overview of scoring and handicap regulations as established by the USGA.

    • All 9 and 18-hole scores should be posted for handicapping.
    • All posted scores should have Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) applied (see below).
    • Posting an away score requires the course/slope ratings of the away course.
    • If you play 7 to 12 holes, a 9-hole score should be posted.
    • If you play 13 or more holes, an 18-hole score should be posted.
    • If you start but do not complete a hole or a stroke is conceded, you should record for handicap purposes the score you most likely would have made.
    • If you do not play a hole, your score for that hole for handicap purposes shall be par plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to receive on the hole.

    Sample Scoring with ESC

Example: An 11-handicapper plays the first 7 holes as indicated below. A 9-hole ESC score of 43 should be posted with a correction on hole #2 (ESC) and scores added according to the rules on holes #8 and #9 (both unplayed).
