                                                                              Geography Department

Let me start this by introducing myself.  My name is Timothy Johnson.  I am a fourth-semester sophomore attending Penn State University.  I was born on July 30, 1987.  I have two brothers and two great parents.

I came to this university all the way from a town called Selden, in the state of New York.  The town is situated on the almost exact center of Long Island.  Nonetheless, it is only a matter of minutes to drive to the beach; whatever beach you choose to go to.  The interesting fact about my town, and most towns on Long Island, is that it is only a short drive to two shores; the ocean and the Long Island Sound.  I am grateful for where I came from because I absolutely love the beach.  It gives me a sense of the outdoors – which I also love.

The outdoors is indirectly the reason I came here to Penn State.  Being an outdoors type of guy, I participated in such activities as hiking, biking, swimming and most other sports.  I also like to travel.  When I used to travel to different areas in the United States, I developed a strong appreciation of the world around me.  I was fascinated with maps as well.  It was when I knew more useless geography trivia than all of my peers, and my parents, that I believed that geography should become a major role in my life.  Penn State University has got a wonderful geography program from what I researched, and because of it, I am going to continue the rest of my undergraduate studies here in this department.

With my heart and determination set out on geography as my academic major, I am also going to go down the route of GIS mapping.  I am not really sure at this point what possible jobs I specifically look for, but the rest of my undergraduate studies here should help me decide how I want to apply my future GIS skills.  My goals in life are to have a steady job that pays a lot, and be socially and physically comfortable.  With a great deal of determination and work ethic, I definitely see myself evolving into the person with the qualities mentioned before.
