7-22-04: it's getting hot in here

Information is a kind of heat. I would suggest that as our society accumulates information, from its hunter-gatherer origins to the complexities of our present day, it raises the cultural temperature. I feel that we may be approaching a cultural boiling point.

Alan Moore talks about information and cultural complexity, comics, literature, terrorism, and a whole lot more in a Salon.com interview. (You have to sit through an ad to get a "day pass" if you're not a subscriber, but in this case I think it's worth it.) [via Thought Balloons]

7-16-04: DIY loves libraries love DIY

No Media Kings expresses love for libraries with a NO MEDIA KINGS, YES LIBRARY BLING drive. (Instead of buying a book, donate a copy to a library. Thus you help both the DIY publisher and your library.) [via librarian.net]

On a related note, I had a very nice experience at my local library yesterday. I wanted to check out a travel guide which had a note in the back saying that it was available for overnight loan and due back by 10 a.m. the next day. But, when I took it to the circulation desk, I found I was attempting to break the rules beause overnight loans aren't supposed to go out until 1 hour before closing time. I was all set to walk away disappointed, but the woman at the circulation desk simply called the reference desk, asked if they would make an exception, got the okay, and checked the book out to me. Now that's good, empowered customer service! I have to go back and see if they have any books on caring for snakes.
