"One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." - Henry Miller
Welcome to the geo-blog of a traveler; a young man in search of world citizenship. Henry Miller's quote illuminates the distinction between a traveler and a tourist. Thomas's curiosity and wanderlust lead him to many places both physically and mentally and for the spring of 2010 these will lead him to Eastern Asia. Centered mainly in China, Thomas is studying and observing language, culture, economics and globalization. In an effort to share this journey and collaborate with all manner of other travelers, Thomas has started The Good Traveler geo-blog.
Below is a map that illustrates Thomas's travels starting at the end of 2009 Each orange flag denotes a post from that location which you can click on to view. This blog is intended to share thoughts and experiences and therefore all visitors are highly encouraged to comment.
Blogs will be tagged in three different categories(via Jenny Dickey - Penn State University):
Intercultural Understanding - Understanding a unique quality of your host culture that you didn't know before, or is different than you expected it to be. (examples: communication styles, political unrest, fashion, food, transportation, etc)
Global Citizenship - Making connections between your host culture and your role as an American citizen or as a citizen of the world. (examples: anti-American sentiment, globalization, environmental concerns, international affairs, consumption, cause and effect between you and your host culture, etc.)
Community Engagement - This is where we want to hear about you coming face to face with your host culture, interacting on a variety of levels. (examples: birthday parties, volunteering, joining a club, participating in an event, making local friends, walking through a street market, etc.)
