Dr. Lentz retired after 30 years of teaching at Penn State at the end of June, 2010. He specialized in Oral Interpretation, or "the application of the skills of the oral storyteller to the performance of written literature." He taught
CAS 84S, Communication Contexts in Ancient Greece,
CAS 100A, Effective Speech, CAS 280W, Storytelling and Speaking, CAS 211, Informative Speaking, and CAS 480, Group Performance of Literature. The
480 class produced many Readers Theatre productions seen on campus,
including readings of the Katey Lehman and Edward Nichols Award stories written by Penn State Students. Some of the materials for those classes can be accessed through this site, including a "fill-in-the-blank" format for organized papers and speeches.
For nine years Lentz also directed the Learning Edge Academic Program (LEAP) for first-year
students entering University Park, helping to build the program from 374 students in 2001 to around 940 in 2010.
Dr. Lentz's annual two-hour presentation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol has been a feature of the Christmas season in the State College Community since 1980. Known as a local storyteller, Lentz also taught storytelling workshops for Continuing Education and others. Look for the "Dark in the Park" storytelling by the Tussey Mountain Talespinners every October sponsored by Centre Region Parks & Recreation.

Lentz, his wife Alicia, and first two sons John and Chris had lived in Greece during the first Spring Semester of the Athens Program in PSU Education Abroad during 1989. Third son Andrew was introduced to many of the places the older two had visited before. Note that the desktop for the page is a photo of the bottom of the Mediterranean seen through about 12 feet of water off the rocky coast of the Island of Hydra. Lentz is spending more time with extended family in North Carolina and Maine, visiting son John and wife Heather in Louisville, Colorado, son Christopher in Winchester, Virginia, and providing taxi service for Penn State student Andrew. He is also beginning to work through over seventy boxes of books and papers from his 30 years in Sparks Building, while also starting to collect some of his poetry and essays for publication on this page. He also looks forward to hearing from former students, who---after his wife and sons---have been the joy of his life. |
