Penn Central ex-PRR trackage: Osceola Mills

Osceola Mills yard was the hub of the Pennsylvania Railroad's coal operations in Clearfield and Centre counties right up to the creation of Penn Central on February 1, 1968. The view above, looking north, shows the cleaning plant of the Elliot Coal Co., where strip-mined coal was prepared and loaded for rail shipment. The primary outlet for Osceola-gathered coal was southward over the Clearfield Branch to connections at Tyrone with the Bald Eagle Branch and the Middle Divison of the mainline. The Moshannon Branch, which ran west from Osceola, and the numerous other branches eminating from it, served as the principal coal-gathering network. Below, the Osceola enginehouse, built sometime before 1900, as it appeared in April 1968, shortly before PC razed it and based crews and motive power in Clearfield. It was located at the north end of the yard.
