Penn Central ex-NYC trackage: Cherry Tree Branch

The New York Central, and later Penn Central, maintained a small yard at Cherry Tree, primarily to handle coal coming off the Cherry Tree & Dixonville, jointly owned and operated (pre-Penn Central) by the NYC and PRR. Above, westbound empties bound for Cherry Tree, 35.7 miles distant, leave B&O trackage at CB Junction and regain PC rails on the bridge across the West Branch of the Susquehanna River between Clearfield and Curwensville. The B&O's C&M branch can be seen against the hillside just to the left of the lead GP30's handrails. The date is March 8, 1969.
Above, on another day in March 1969, a loaded train from Cherry Tree heads east through one of the cuts excavated in the early 1960s, when several miles of the Cherry Tree Branch were relocated to make room for the new U.S. Corps of Engineers' Curwensville Dam. Ballast denoting the branch's original alignment is visible in the photo below, running parallel to, but below, the newer line. This train is westbound between Lumber City and Mahaffey, adjacent to Pa. Route 879, in August 1972.
