WHAT IS A 4-H AGENT ANYHOW?

As a professional 4-H and Youth Development Agent with Penn State Cooperative Extension, I am often asked what is a 4-H agent? It used to annoy me to have to explain what I do. If I could say,"I'm a plumber or a computer programmer", it would be easily understood and that would be the end of it. But, I'm a 4-H agent.

I am responsible for the development and coordination of 4-H and youth development programs and adult volunteer training. The Lebanon County 4-H Program involves 1,087 4-H members and 152 volunteer leaders. I am responsible for the coordination of 27 traditional community based 4-H clubs, school enrichment programs, special interest & short-term groups, and the resident and day camp programs as well as developing and implementing appropriate curriculum materials. I also facillitate the 4-H Board of Directors which provides direction for fund raising, program development, and evaluation. As 4-H agent, I recruit, train, and counsel adult leaders in all project areas in addition to teaching program content in leadership development, youth development, and communication skills. I'm a 4-H agent.

I teach, I organize, I counsel adults and kids. I run errands for the board and committees that I caused to be. I write reports and news stories. I direct camps. I can do everything pretty well except tell what I do in 25 words or less so that everyone can understand.
