State College, Pa., Feb. 14, 2002 -- Senior night turned into school-record night as State College defeated visiting Williamsport 105-40.
The 105 points is the most ever in school history eclipsing the 102 points scored a year ago against Dubois. It also was the second time this season the Lions have reached the century mark. State College scored 100 points on Jan. 11 at Huntingdon.
Senior night also was "share the wealth" night as coach Bethany Irwin alternated platoons of five for most of the contest. Junior varsity players Carly Onkotz, Monika Fogelsanger and Amber Strouse also gained their first varsity playing time.
The Lions led 24-12 after the first quarter but bumped that up to 56-20 by intermission.
After building a 75-27 advantage in the third period, State College exploded for 30 points in the final quarter.
Scoring honors went to senior Katie Glusko who had 20 points with junior Suzy Carlson right behind her with 19 points. Sophomore Sarah O'Shea, who had 10 points in the junior varsity game, chipped in 11 for the varsity. Senior Lisa Younkin was the other double figure scorer with 10 points. State College's 105 points came from 12 different players.
Before the varsity game, State College recognized its four senior players who were presented with flowers and other mementoes after being escorted on to the floor by their parents. The seniors are Glusko, Younkin, Rebecca Shore and Susie Sieminski. Senior manager Nathan Wrye and his parents also were part of the ceremony.
Glusko will continue her hoop career at West Virginia. Sieminski will continue her studies at Penn State.
The Lions got their 101st point from O'Shea at 1:08. Onkotz made two free throws to break the school record at :40.2 and Fogelsanger swished a turnaround in the lane at 7.3 to set the 105-point record.
State College concludes its regular season at home with Hollidaysburg on Feb. 20. The Lady Little Lions already own the No. 1 seed in the District 6 playoffs.
