State College, Pa., Feb. 9, 2002 -- State College coach Bethany Irwin's decision to run paid off handsomely as her Little Lady Lions outscored visiting Lewistown 86-50.
"We set the tempo of the game and we ran on them," Irwin said of her team's 13th straight win. "We got a lot of opportunities off of fast breaks."
Irwin's charges stormed out to a 10-0 lead in the first four minutes and had a 25-6 advantage in the opening quarter when senior Katie Glusko put up 16 points.
Glusko, the school's all-time leading scorer, had pumped in 43 Tuesday night at Central Mountain and finished with a game-high 24 points against the Lady Panthers.
Junior Suzy Carlson came through with 13 points and senior Rebecca Shore posted all 12 of her points in the second half.
Juniors Nicole Scipione and Liz Gabrielle came off the bench for 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Lady Little Lions, 18-2 and ranked No. 5 in this week's state poll, were ahead 42-24 at halftime and up 58-36 at the end of the third quarter.
State College began the fourth quarter by outscoring Lewistown 10-2 over the first three minutes and held at least a 30-point lead through most of the period.
Lewistown's scoring leaders were Jen Cunningham with 12 points, Maddie Runk with 11 points and Andrea Kaufman with 10 points.
Lewistown's record is now 18-5. The Lady Panthers already have clinched the top seed in the District 6 AAA playoffs.
The Lions step out of district 6 to host Indiana Monday in game between two teams already ticketed to postseason play. The Little Indians are 21-2 and have played a challenging schedule that includes top teams from the WPIAL. Defending state champion Oakland Catholic and highly-regarded Hempfield own the victories over Indiana.
