State College, Pa., Feb. 20, 2002 -- First it was a leaky roof then leading scorer Katie Glusko had an off night while battling the flu but State College overcame both problems to end its regular season with a 59-32 victory at home over Hollidaysburg.
A wet spot on the floor at the end of the third quarter of the jv game led officials to the roof of the gym and a long delay to repair the opening.
Senior Katie Glusko played her last game at home while she also was "under the weather" but rallied to share scoring honors with teammate Suzy Carlson as both provided 13 points.
The Lions, 21-3, never trailed building a 13-3 lead in the first period then enjoying a 30-11 advantage at the half.
Carlson was the sparkplug in the opening two quarters scoring nine of her 13 points.
Everything slowed down in the third quarter when the two teams combined for just 18 points but State College spurted in the final period to finish with 59 points, just six under the Lions' season average.
Coach Bethany Irwin said a stronger defense was the answer to what a fan described as Hollidaysburg's insomnia offense.
"Sometimes they try to do that to delay the game so we don't have a lot of possessions so I knew defensively we had to pick it up," Irwin said. "That first half we had a lot of points coming off of our defense."
Hollidaysburg (13-9) also finished its regular season. Rachael Degol led the Lady Eagles with nine points.
Irwin said Glusko was suffering from a flu-like illness but her teammates were able to fill in for the senior scoring leader. "Everybody stepped up," Irwin said. "Rebecca (Shore) had an outstanding game. Lisa Younkin had so much energy I had to calm her down. Susie Sieminski did a great job defensively."
Glusko received a certificate honoring her selection as a nominee for the McDonald's All-America Girl's High School Basketball Game. Earlier in the week she was named the Giant-Eagle Athlete of the Week by WTAJ-TV.
State College has a week to prepare for the District 6 Playoffs which begin Monday with a play-in game between Altoona and Dubois at Central Cambria High School. The Lions will face the winner of that game on Wednesday at a site to be determined. Central Mountain and Hollidaysburg are paired in the other half of the bracket.
