Bernie Cafarelli Wins Lester Jordan Award
Notre Dame Associate SID Honored for Work With Academic All-America Program

Bernie Cafarelli, associate sports information director at the University of Notre Dame, is this year's recipient of the Lester Jordan Award.

The award is presented annually to an individual for meritorious service to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America program and recognizes Cafarelli for her role as a district coordinator, national coordinator and now vice chair.

The Lester Jordan Award is named after Jordan who founded the Academic All-America program in the early 1950's while the sports information director at SMU.

Cafarelli has been a member of the Academic All-America Committee since 1988 and currently serves as a vice-chairman for the college division.

A 1983 graduate of Notre Dame, Cafarelli is starting her seventh year in the Fighting Irish sports information office. After obtaining a master's degree from Ohio Universithy in 1984, she worked for three years as an assitant SID at William & Mary.

She moved to Providence for a seven-year stint as assistant director of marketing, promotions and media relations. While at Providence, she served as primary contact for 15 sports. Cafarelli also was tournament director for the 1993 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship.

At Notre Dame, Cafarelli oversees media relations and production of publicity material for all Notre Dame Olympic sports teams. She works primarily with the men's soccer, men's basketball and men's lacrosse teams. In addition, she served as a media assistant at the 2000 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship.
