State College Defeats Central Mountain 70-48
Coach Bethany Irwin Wins 150th Game With Lady Little Lions

State College, Pa., Jan. 16, 2002 -- State College's 70-48 victory over visiting Central Mountain included a postgame ceremony honoring coach Bethany Irwin for her 150th victory at the school.

"I didn't even think about this," Irwin said of the milestone. "I was just very surprised and I'm very proud to be a part of State College girls' basketball."

Irwin's Lions, ranked sixth in the state, improved to 12-2 and 4-0 in the Mountain League against a scrappy Wildcat squad that fell to 8-5 and 1-3.

The first quarter was a seesaw battle with five lead changes. And when State College leading scorer senior Katie Glusko was whistled for her second foul with 4:07 remaining, the Warriors rolled to a 10-7 advantage.

That's when junior Nicole Scipione came off the bench for the Lions and scored 13 of her team's next 18 points helping SC to an 18-12 edge after the first quarter and a 32-18 advantage midway through the second stanza. Another reserve, junior Liz Gabrielle, also contributed scoring five points in the second period.

The Lions' advantage soon began to evaporate as Central Mountain scored the last nine points of the quarter and headed to the lockers trailing 32-24.

State College got major help from Glusko after intermission whose three started the third quarter. Central Mountain's Lindsey Hollobaugh, who had nine points at halftime, added two but the Lions' Suzy Carlson answered with a 3-pointer. That's when Glusko got hot scoring eight of the Lions' next 10 points to give State College a 48-35 lead as the teams began the final period.

State College's balance made the diference over the final eight minutes as seven Lady Lions had a hand in the team's 22 points. Scipione had five to move her total to a career-high 20 points. Lisa Younkin scored four straight points, Carlson had three, Erika Conner had three, Susie Sieminski had one, Glusko four and Gabrielle went coast to coast to end the game.

Hollobaugh took game scoring honors with 21 points.

Glusko finished with 17 points for the Lions sending her season total to 295. Carlson added 15 points. State College hosts Franklin Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Central Mountain hosts North Schuylkill Saturday.
