State College Loses At Bishop Guilfoyle

Altoona, Pa., Feb. 13, 2002 -- Bishop Guilfoyle's Lady Marauders made their foul shots when it counted to upset visiting State College 65-62.

The loss by the Lady Little Lions ended a 14-game win streak and gave Guilfoyle its first win in the series since 1996 ending another streak of nine straight State College victories.

State College fell behind 27-13 in the first quarter and trailed 41-30 by intermission.

"It was a big hole," State College coach Bethany Irwin said. "BG didn't miss in the first quarter and I don't know how many teams can do that. I give credit to them in the first quarter. I think it was a tough battle after that."

State College was still in the hole at the end of the third quarter but had fought back from an 11-point deficit to within four (45-41) as the period ended.

Suzy Carlson, who scored a team-high 16 points before fouling out with 2:52 to play, connected on the first of two free throws to tie the game at 50 in the final period. A bucket by Nicole Scipione at 5:04 knotted the score again at 52 but that was the last tie in the contest.

After BG sohomore Angela Greaser made the last two of her nine free throws in the fourth quarter to put the Marauders up 64-62, the Lions missed four straight shots including three from layup range.

BG's last point came from sophomore Sonja Hinish at the free throw line. Hinish led the Marauders with 14 points. Greaser finished with 12 points and Abby Sioiosa scored 11 points as Bishop Guilfoyle improved to 21-4.

Guilfoyle scored all of its points in the final period from the free throw line. State College lost starters Susie Sieminski, Carlson and Lisa Younkin to personal fouls in the 4th quarter. Carlson, who had the hot hand, picked up her second personal just 2:34 into the first period.

Katie Glusko, State College's all-time scorer who as averaging over 20 points per game, was held to a season-low 10 points.

"What I told the kids was we just lost a battle, not the war," Irwin said. 'This game is going to be very important to us. You can turn a loss into a building block."

State College, 19-3, hosts Williamsport Thursday and concludes the regular season at home with Hollidaysburg on Feb. 20. The Lady Little Lions already own the No. 1 seed in the District 6 playoffs.
