State College Loses To Mercyhurst Prep
Season Ends In PIAA 2nd Round

State College's Lady Little Lions lost to Mercyhurst Prep 43-32 in the 2nd round of the PIAA Championships in a game played at Clarion High School. The Lakers improved to 26-1 while State College ends its season at 18-8. The Lady Little Lions had defeated the Lakers 61-60 during a regular season game in Erie in December. State was forced to play what proved to be its final game of the season without Monika Fogelsanger who was out with the flu. "She is our leading post player and in points," coch Bethany Irwin said, "and I knew she wanted to play in the worst way. Every senior gave everything they could." Jessie Serafin led the Lions with nine points and Sarah O'Shea and Kelly Ashcraft each scored seven. Chelsea Gordon led Mercyhurst Prep with 13 points.
State Opens With Win Over
North Allegheny in PIAA 1st Round

March 5, 2004 -- Steel Valley HS Game 25
State College outscored North Allegheny 27-8 in the last two quarters to post a 51-42 win in the first round of the PIAA playoffs at Steel Valley High School. The Lady Little Lions (18-7) trailed 34-24 at halftime. That's when coach Bethany Irwin challenged her seniors. "I told them they were being outhustled by juniors and sophomores and that they didn't want this to end," she said. The message got through as the Lions scrambled back to trail by four (40-36) at the end of the third quarter. North Allegheny then couldn't buy a basket scoring once on a layup in the final seconds. After a drive down the lane by Sarah O'Shea knotted the score at 40, Jessie Serafin hit a 3-pointer to give the Lions the lead for good. The Lady Tigers, WPIAL semifinalists and 53-51 victors over State College in December, end their season at 21-7. Monika Fogelsanger (13 points), Carly Onkotz (12 points) and Serafin (12 points) led State College while Molly Friel (13 points) and Stephanie Wolf (10 points) paced North Allegheny.
Altoona Wins District 6 Title
Outscores State 22-11 in 4th Quarter

Feb. 27, 2004 -- St. Francis, Pa. Game 24
State College (17-7) lost to Altoona 67-53 in the championship game of the District 6 Championship at St. Francis University. Altoona (23-1) rallied from a 30-29 halftime deficit to outscore the Lady Little Lions 38-23 in the last two quarters with a 22-11 advantage in the final period. State held the lead for the last time at 42-40 late in the third quarter before Altoona scored five straight points to lead 45-42 as the quarter ended. Erin Dotson, Kristy Little and Amanda Pierce scored the lead-changing points for Altoona. Little took game scoring honors with 24 points followed by teammate Pierce with 17 points. Monika Fogelsanger led State College with 15 points with Jessie Serafin contributing 13 and Sarah O'Shea 12 points. The victory for Altoona halts a three-year reign by State College as the District 6 Champion. The Lady Lions will meet the seventh seed from District 7 in the PIAA first round while State College will meet the fourth seed.
Lions Win 1st Game of District Playoffs

State College advanced to the District 6 finals with a 71-35 victory over Central Mountain completing a 3-game sweep of the Wildcats this season. "Our game on the 25th was completely differerent," coach Bethany Irwin said referring to the 45-43 barnburner her team won over the Wildcats in Mill Hall on Feb. 11. State's offensive juggernaut pushed the Lions to a 43-6 lead by halftime and the clock ran continuously from the first play of the third quarter when the lead jumped to 40 points. Jessie Serafin led all scorers with 24 points incuding six 3-point field goals and Monika Fogelsanger scored 18 points. "It was so amazing to see us play so well together," Irwin said.
Lions Cruise By Perry
Close Regular Season With 56-20 Romp

Feb. 14, 2004 -- State College, Pa. Game 22
State College emptied its bench and forced the use of the mercy rule in its regular season finale 56-20 victory over visiting Perry Traditional Academy. The 17-6 Commodores had won nine of their last 11 contests but couldn't buy a basket falling behind 18-2 after the first quarter and 35-8 by intermission. Lady Little Lion seniors Sarah O'Shea (12 points), Monika Fogelsanger (10 points), Carly Onkotz (9 points), Jessie Serafin (six points) and Amber Yearick (5 points) had to score early as coach Bethany Irwin found playing time for every player on her bench. The Lions improve to 16-6 and have 11 days to prepare for the opening of postseason.
Lions Edge Central Mountain
Feb. 11, 2004 -- Mill Hall, Pa. Game 21
State College completed its sweep of Mountain High League and District 6 opponent Central Mountain with a 45-43 victory over the Lady Wildcats. Carly Onkotz took team scoring honors with 14 points and Monika Fogelsanger also was in double figures with 13 points. Central Mountain's Missy Blazina led the Wildcats with 13 points and Kate Hennegan had 11 points. The game was close throughout with the Lady Little Lions leading 18-17 at the end of the first quarter before the score was tied at 26 at intermission. State College outscored Central Mountain 6-3 in the third quarter then held on for the two-point victory at the end. "We switched defenses in the second half," coach Bethany Irwin said. "We stole the ball and forced them into bad shots." Irwin said the Lady Wildcats kept the game close by making 11 threes with seven coming before halftime. State College improves to 15-6 with its last regular season game at home Saturday afternoon with Perry. The Lady Little Lion junior varsity pounded Central Mountain 62-20 with Bethany Irwin earning the win substituting for her assistant Rob Irwin. Amanda Clouse led the JV scoring with 13 points. The SC JV finished the year with a 17-0 record posting its fifth straight season without a loss and extending its consecutive victories to 97.
Lions Defeat Penn Cambria
Feb. 9, 2004 -- Cresson, Pa. Game 20
State College picked up win No. 14 with a 64-49 victory at Penn Cambria. Three Lady Little Lions reached double figures led by Monika Fogelsanger with 15 points, Sarah O'Shea with 13 points and Kelsey Ream with 12 points. State led 17-15 after the first quarter but pulled ahead 30-23 by halftime. The lead increased to 47-37 at the end of the third quarter leading to the 64-49 final margin. State's JV moved its record to 16-0 with a 57-38 victory against Penn Cambria extending its win streak to 97 straight. Next up for State College is a game at Central Mountain Wednesday.

Lions Over Hollidaysburg

Feb. 4, 2004 -- Hollidaysburg, Pa. Game 19
State College rallied to outscore league rival Hollidaysburg 31-19 in the second half to gain a 53-44 victory. The Lions trailed by three at halftime but senior Monika Fogelsanger, saddled with fouls in the first half, got all of her team-high 17 points in the last two quarters and the Lions improved to 13-6 overall. "We went up by as many as 10 in the third quarter but they hit some key shots back to back to get it within two," coach Bethany Irwin said. "Andrea Cooper had five threes and went six for six from the line but we changed our defense in the third quarter and I think that caught them off guard." Sarah O'Shea had 13 points and Jessie Serafin added 10 points to boost State's scoring. The Lion JV improved to 15-0 with a 55-36 win over Hollidaysburg with Alli Mock and Shelby Nelson sharing scoring honors with nine points.
State College Upset

Bishop Guilfoyle (15-4) had three players in double figures in its 51-43 upset of visiting State College. The Lions trailed 26-29 at the half and were outscored 22-17 in the second stanza. Angela Greaser led the Lady Marauders with 15 points aided by Lindsay Conner with 13 points and Lindsey Sissler with 11 points. Jessie Serafin led the Lady Little Lions with 18 points while Monika Fogelsanger had 16. "We had their lead down in the fourth quarter," coach Bethany Irwin said. "We had our chances but the ball just didn't fall." State College's JV improved to 14-0 with a 46-27 victory over BG. The Lions face another road game at Hollidaysburg Wednesday followed by a home game Saturday afternoon with Indiana.

64-40 League Win Over Central Mountain

State College seniors Monika Fogelsaner and Amber Yearick provided 15 of their team's 20 points in the third quarter boosting a six-point halftime advantage to a 48-29 lead. The Lion's front line of Fogelsanger, Yearick and Kelsey Ream combined to add another 10 points in the fourth quarter leading State to a 64-40 victory over visiting Central Mountain. Fogelsanger paced State with 19 points and Yearick added a career-high 14 points. Central Mountain's Missy Blazina took game scoring honors with 23 points. The win evened State College's record to 2-2 in the Mountain High League and 12-5 overall while Central Mountain dropped to 0-4 in the league and 8-9 overall. State College plays a makeup game at Bishop Guilfoyle Monday. The Lions' JV (13-0) won 52-25 behind Kelly Ashcraft's game-leading 12 points. The JV has won 93 straight games.
State Defeats Lower Dauphin
Ending Falcons' 17-Game Win Streak

Jan. 24, 2003 -- State College, Pa. Game 16
Monika Fogelsanger scored a career-high 22 points to help State College (11-5) defeat visiting Lower Dauphin (17-2) 52-39 ending the Falcons' 17-game win streak. The Lions maintained a lead through the first two quarters but the margin was only 25-20 at the half. Lower Dauphin scored six of the first eight points in the third quarter to tie the game at 27 with 4:40 left in the period. Back-to-back buckets by Fogelsanger and Kelsey Ream plus two free throws from Carly Onkotz pushed the Lion advantage back to 33-27. Lower Dauphin came within three points twice early in the fourth quarter but a State College 11-2 run that included eight points from Fogelsanger gave the Lions a 48-34 margin with 2:42 remaining in the contest. After Alex Bream hit a 3-point field goal, State got another Fogelsanger deuce and Onkotz and Jessie Serafin capitalized on two straight one plus one opportunities at the free throw line. Bream and Casey Stokes shared scoring honors for the Dolphins with 13 points. The Lions will host Indiana Tuesday then visit Bishop Guilfoyle Thursday followed by a league contest at home with Central Mountain Saturday. State College's junior varsity won its 12th straight of the current season and stretched its win streak to 92 games with a 44-27 victory over Lower Dauphin. Ream led the SC scoring with 12 points.
Lions Fall To Oakland Catholic
2nd Half Turnovers Benefit Eagles

State College lost to defending PIAA champion Oakland Catholic 46-35. The Lady Little Lions (10-5) built a 21-14 lead in the first half when the visiting Eagles scored just two 3-point field goals and made eight free throws. Ball control became an issue in the third quarter when the Lions were outscored 14-2. "At halftime we talked about concentrating on three areas," State College coach Bethany Irwin said. "We wanted to stop the fouls, rebound and not allow them offensive putbacks, and stop the turnovers. We just didn't focus at all," she said. The Eagles (16-3) got a huge boost from their guards as Aysha Jones scored 15 points. Erica Prosser finished with 12 points including the two treys in the first half and Sarah Bucar scored 13 points. All of Bucar's points were in the second half. State College was led by Monika Fogelsanger with nine points and reserves Hannah Laman-Maharg with seven points and Kelly Ashcraft with six points. Maharg had State's only 3-point field goal in the game. The Lions must bounce back for another highly regarded opponent tomorrow when Lower Dauphin (16-1) visits for an afternoon game. The Lion JV continued its string of victories with a 48-37 win over Oakland Catholic. The JV own an 11-0 record this season and have won 91 straight games. Ali Mock led State with 15 points and Ashcraft contributed 10 points in the JV contest.
Defense Keys Win Over Hollidaysburg
Jan. 21, 2004 -- State College, Pa. Game 14
A stifling defensive effort in the second half propelled State College to a 57-22 victory over visiting Hollidaysburg. The two teams were only four points apart (13-9) after the first quarter with the Lions extending the margin to 10 (27-17) at halftime. State College led 48-20 at the end of the third period as both teams cooled off in the final quarter. Sarah O'Shea's 16 points gave her game scoring honors while Monika Fogelsanger added nine points. State's JV held on for a 43-37 victory scoring the game's last four points from the free throw line after Hollidaysburg closed to 39-37 at the 1:56 mark. Sarah Scott, Kelsey Ream and Hannah Maharg combined to extend the lead from the charity stripe.
Fogelsanger Leads Lions To 9th Win
Jan. 10, 2004 -- State College, Pa. Game 13
Senior Monika Fogelsanger scored a career-high 21 points to lead State College over visiting Greensburg Central Catholic 54-47. The Lady Little Lions improved to 9-4 while the Lady Centurions fell to 10-3. The Lions win snapped GCC's five-game win streak. Three-point sharpshooters Sarah O'Shea (14 points) and Jessie Serafin (11 points) helped Fogelsanger counter the Centurions' determined pressure. State led 28-16 at halftime but Greensburg Central Catholic made a nine-point run in the third quarter to draw within eight points (36-28). Danielle McRickard then missed two free throws and Fogelsanger scored four of State's last six points in the period. The Lady Centurions made another push in the fourth quarter to draw within 10 (46-36) but Serafin had two threes wrapped around Fogelsanger's deuce. That gave State a 54-36 lead with 3:14 to go. The Lions did not score again and the Centurions closed the final margin to seven with 12 straight points. State is the county's leading 3 point shooting team and made GCC pay with seven treys. The Centurions did not score a three in the contest. Free throws also hurt GCC who made just nine of 17. State College's next two games are on the road begining Wednesday at Central Mountain and continuing Thursday at Bishop Hoban in a makeup game rescheduled from Dec. 5. State's JV won its 89th straight game as Kelsey Ream led the way with 11 points. The JV moved one game past the all-time D-1 college record of 88 straight wins set by UCLA's men from 1971 through 1974.
Altoona Wins Rematch

Fourth-ranked Altoona (12-1) completed a regular season sweep of State College with a 54-43 victory on its home court Wednesday night. Altoona won the opener Dec. 9 by 63-58. The Lady Little Lions (8-4) fell behind 25-12 in the first quarter and trailed 39-20 by halftime. "It was a tough first quarter," coach Bethany Irwin said. State College recovered to outscore Altoona 23-15 in the second half. Altoona's Kristi Little led all scorers with 19 points with teammates Amanda Pierce scoring 15 points and Erin Dotson 11 points. State College's Sarah O'Shea led the Lady Little Lions with 14 points and Monika Fogelsanger added 12 points. State College's JV continued its long winning streak with a 38-31 victory over Altoona's JV. The win was the 88th in a row tying the national mark for men's basketball set by UCLA from 1971 to 1974. State College returns home to host Greensburg Central Catholic Saturday afternoon.

Lions Past Williamsport 67-36

Jan. 3, 2004 -- State College, Pa. Game 11
State College (8-3) defeated visiting Williamsport (8-3) 67-36 to notch its seventh straight win. Senior Monika Fogelsanger scored 11 of her game-high 18 points to push the Lions ahead 24-10 in the first quarter. State College outscored the Millionaires 16-10 in the second period to take a 40-20 lead into intermission. The scoring differential was 20-9 in the third period for a 60-29 Lion advantage resulting in a running clock in the final quarter. Seniors Sarah O'Shea and Jessie Serafin each scored 12 points for the Lions. Medina Ali led Williamsport with 11 points. State College travels to Altoona Wednesday. The game is a rematch between the top two teams in District 6. Altoona won 63-58 in the first game played at State College Dec. 9. The State College JV won its 87th straight game and its seventh of the year with a 56-18 pounding of Williamsport's JV. Sara Grove led the Lion scoring with 12 points.
Lions Post 30-Point Victory

State College held Bishop Carroll to a season-low 28 points and won its sixth straight game while recapturing the Kiwanis Holiday Tournament title it has now won for three of the last four years. The Lions earned their 58-28 victory with balanced scoring led by All-Tournament selection Monika Fogelsanger who scored a team-high 13 points. Jessie Serafin and Kelsey Ream each scored 12 points for the 7-3 Lady Little Lions. Bishop Carroll dropped to 7-3 and was led by Alyssa Bishop with six points. Abington (7-4) defeated Greater Latrobe (5-7) 59-36 in the consolation game. State College's Fogelsanger and Carly Onkotz were named to the all-tournament team along with BC's Anne Popovich and Bishop. Senior Sarah O'Shea was the Most Valuable Person for State College and Ali Meckey earned the same honor for Bishop Carroll.
Lions Advance To Kiwanis Final

State College built a 10-4 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 63-31 win over Greater Latrobe in the first round of the Kiwanis Holiday Tournament. The Lions (6-3) will meet Bishop Carroll (7-2) in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. today. The Lions outscored the Wildcats 26-9 in the first half then more than doubled that margin in the second stanza when a running clock based on a 30-point advantage shortened the game by several minutes. Senior Sarah O'Shea scored all 13 of her points in the third quarter with double-figure backup scoring from Jessie Serafin and Monica Fogelsanger who each scored 10 points. Tiffany Menhorn led the Wildcats with 13 points.
State Wins 4th Straight
O'Shea Keys Second Quarter Run

The Lady Little Lions won their fourth straight game after recovering from a 15-13 first quarter deficit to overwhelm visiting JFK-Ohio 70-35. The two-point 1st quarter advantage by the visiting Eagles quickly evaporated as State made a 25-2 run before intermission. Senior Sarah O'Shea scored 11 of her game-high 17 points during the second quarter making three straight treys to lead the offensive explosion. State College's 70 points was its highest scoring output of the season. State improved to 5-3. JFK dropped to 4-3. The Lions have a week break before hosting Latrobe, Abington and Bishop Carroll in the Kiwanis Holiday Classic Dec. 29 and 30. State College's JV defeated JFK 48-17 extending its win streak to 86 straight games. The all-time Division I win streak in college basketball of 88 was set by UCLA's men from 1971 to 1974.
Lions Roar Over Erie McDowell
Dec. 20 2003 -- Erie, Pa. Game 7
State College won for the second time in two days with a 66-39 romp at Erie McDowell. The Lions extended a 13-11 lead in the first quarter to 31-22 at halftimne then outscored McDowell 35-17 in the third and fourth quarters. Katlyn Stupar led all scores with 15 points and Sarah O'Shea added 11 points. Carly Onkotz had a double-dboule combining 10 points with 10 assists. Kelly Ashcraft scored all eight of her points off the bench in the fourth quarter.
State Stuns No. 4 Mercyhurst Prep 61-60
Dec. 19, 2003 -- Erie, Pa. Game 6
Senior Jessie Serafin's 3-point field goal and free throw after a technical helped State College upset fourth-ranked Mercyhurst Prep 61-60 in Erie. The Lady Little Lions improved to 3-3 and the Lakers dropped to 6-1. Serafin, who finished with a team-high 19 points, knocked down a trey to bring State back from a 3-point deficit with 1.5 seconds to play tying the score at 60. Mercyhurst Prep then called a timeout but had no timeouts left and was called for a technical foul. That sent Serafin to the free throw where she made the first of two. The ball remained in State's possession and the Lions ran out the clock. "We stole one," State College coach Bethany Irwin said. "We played unbelievable defense. We were patient." Irwin had said earlier in the season that her seniors were better than their record showed. They proved that with a stunning upset on the road. Backing up Serafin were seniors Monika Fogelsanger with 15 points and Sarah O'Shea with 12 points, all on 3-point field goals. Junior Mashea Williams led Mercyhurst Prep and took game scoring honors with 27 points. Erin Kerner also was in double figures for the Lakers with 17 points. State College remains in Erie to meet the McDowell Trojans Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Lions Defeat Indian Valley
Dec. 16, 2003 -- State College, Pa. Game 5
Katlyn Stupar converted back-to-back three-point plays to break a 28-28 tie at the end of the second quarter helping State College gain a 34-28 halftime lead and eventually a 63-53 victory over visiting Indian Valley. The Lions opened the third period with a Monika Fogelsanger deuce and Stupar canning two free throws followed by a three-point play by Jessie Serafin to cap a 13-0 run. The Lions held a 47-39 advantage after three quarters. The Lady Warriors got as close as eight points twice in the final period but Fogelsanger answered the first challenge and Serafin, who had a team-high 15 points, answered the second one. Indian Valley's Megan Hartman led all scorers with 19 points putting in 10 of her team's 14 points in the last period. Fogelsanger (14), Sarah O'Shea (12) and Stupar (10) joined Serafin in double figures for State College. Allison Mitchell and Megan Tewksbury each scored 10 for the Lady Warriors. State improved to 2-3 and travels to Mercyhurst Prep Friday followed by a visit to Erie McDowell Saturday. Indian Valley drops to 4-2 .
Late 4th Quarter Surge Falls Short
as Lions Fall 53-51 to North Allegheny

Dec. 13, 2003 -- State College, Pa. Game 4
State College's slow start cost the Lions as visting North Allegheny held on in a wild finish for a 53-51 victory. The Tigers outscored the Lions 13-7 in the first period and led 23-14 at halftime. State College began a 15-0 run with four minutes left in the third period with sophomore reserve Kelsey Ream accounting for eight. Ream again made a key play at the 3:48 mark sinking two free throws then taking a charge and making two more from the line to tie the score at 42 with 3:27 to go. North Allgeheny answered with four straight from the line shared by Laura Casey and Rachel Divorsevic. Casey added two more from the charity stripe to give the Tigers a 48-42 advantage. Ream converted a three- point play but North Allegheny's Jessie Lang answered with a three with 1:50 putting her Tigers ahead 51-45. The teams traded turnovers for the next minute. Ream then converted two more free throws, took a charge and made two more from the stripe to draw the Lions within two (51-49) with 34 seconds remaining. Casey made another pair from the line to pull North Allegheny ahead 53-49. State College senior Carly Onkotz then took the inbounds pass full court for a solo layup with 25.2 remaining. Ream and Sarah O'Shea got the ball back for State on a trap but the Lions could not score in the final 15 seconds. Ream led all scorers with 21 points. Lang was high for the Tigers with 18.
Comeback Falls Short As Altoona Wins 63-58
Dec. 9, 2003 -- State College, Pa. Game 3
Altoona's Samantha Reimer scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Lions to a 63-58 victory over State College. The win ended a string of nine straight victories in the series for State College . Reimer scored nine points in the opening quarter helping Altoona build a 21-9 advantage. State battled back outscoring the visiting Lady Lions 20-11 in the second quarter. State College managed its only lead in the game deep into the third quarter on a Sarah O'Shea three but fell behind 47-45 as the period ended. The Lions closed to within two points twice over the final eight minutes and trailed by three (59-56) after a bucket by Katlyn Stupar with 1:10 remaining. Altoona sank four straight free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory. Stupar led the Lions with 20 points and O'Shea chipped in 15 points. State College is now 1-2 and has a home game Saturday with North Allegheny.
State College Defeats Abington Heights
Nov. 29, 2003 -- Harrisburg, Pa. Game 2
State College bounced back from its 53-41 loss to No. 2 ranked Downingtown East in its season opener Friday to defeat Abington Heights 56-35 in the third place game at Central Dauphin's Tip Off Tourney Saturday. Second-ranked Downingtown East defeated Central Dauphin 48-39 to win the championship game. Sophomore Kelsey Ream came off the bench to lead the Lion scoring effort with 14 points and earn All-Tournament honors despite playing a reserve role. Senior Katlyn Stupar also was in double figures with 11 points. "We came out with so much more intensity," coach Bethany Irwin said. "They were all fired up. Our defense certainly created the offense in the first quarter." State College rolled to a 22-7 advantage in the opening period and led 28-14 at intermission. The Lions outscored Abington Heights 28-21 in the last two quarters. The Lady Little Lions are at Bishop Hoban next Friday night. Bishop Hoban opened with a 65-58 win over Wilkes Barre Meyers Friday.
State College Loses Opener
To Downingtown East

Nov. 28, 2003 -- Harrisburg, Pa. Game 1
State College lost its season opener to Downingtown East 53-41 in the frist round of Central Dauphin's Tip Off Tourney Friday. The Lions fell behind early by 26-14 and trailed 36-27 by halftime. "The height of Emma (Moretzohn) just killed us in the first half," coach Bethany Irwin said. Moretzohn, Downingtown East's 6-5 center, finished with 16 points including 12 in the first half. The second half was a mostly even affair with Downingtown East outscoring the Lady Little Lions by just three points (17-14) through the last two quarters. Sarah O'Shea scored a team high 10 points for State College. The Lions meet Abington Heights Saturday in the third place game.
