Lions Win at Pottsville 70-38 Big 1st Quarter Leads to 10th Win

Pottsville, Pa., Jan. 11, 2003 --

State College jumped out to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter to set the stage for its 10th victory of the season.

The Lady Little Lions defeated Pottsvile 70-38 with what coach Bethany Irwin described as "a hard effort" against the host Lady Tide.

The Lions led 31-15 at halftime after both teams scored 11 points in the second quarter.

"We made great decisions offensively," coach Bethany Irwin said. "We were balanced and looked for each other. The kids were aggressive on the boards."

Sarah O'Shea knocked down two 3-point field goals on the way to a team- leading 17 points. Suzy Carlson and Nicole Scipione each scored 13 points for the now 10-1 Lions.

Kara Delenick paced Pottsville, now 10-4, with 14 points.

The State College junior varsity notched its 68th straight win recovering from an early 0-8 deficit for a 66-44 victory. Carly Onkotz was the leading scorer with 17 points.

State College comes back to Centre County for a pair of Mountain High League games next week. The Lions are at Central Mountain Tuesday night then at Altoona Friday night. State College is the defending league champion.
