Jan. 25, 2003, Hummelstown, Pa. -- State College used a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter to hand host Lower Dauphin only its second loss this season in a 59-38 victory in Hummelstown.
The victory extends the Lady Little Lion win streak to nine games and gives State College a 16-1 record heading into the last three weeks of the regular season. Lower Dauphin is 18-2.
A pair of threes by Sarah O'Shea and two drives down the lane by Suzy Carlson staked State College to a 10-2 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game. Six straight points by Nicole Scipione and a bucket by Monika Fogelsanger made it 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.
By halftime, State College was up 33-18 as Lower Dauphin yielded eight points off turnovers.
Alex Bream gave life to Lower Dauphin in the third quarter scoring seven of her team's first nine points. Carlson slipped and fell bruising her hip with 2:25 left in that period but the Falcons only managed two free throws from Quantina Chau before the end of the quarter.
State College protected its 41-29 third quarter advantage by opening the fourth period with a 3-pointer from Liz Gabriille. Bream then connected on two free throws and a trey to pull the Falcons within 10 points at 44-34 with 6:12 remaining. "We just had to keep our composure," State College coach Bethany Irwin said.
Carlson, who re-entered the game at the quarter break, was fouled and made both free throws. An exchange of possession led to a Carlson 3-pointer and another exchange gave her a chance to score on a drive down the middle. In a minute and four seconds Carlson helped stretch the State College advantage to 51-34. Lower Dauphin scored just four more points in the remaining 4:54.
Carlson led the Lady Little Lions with 15 points. Liz Gabrielle finished with 11 points and Scipione combined 10 points with four steals.
Bream took game scoring honors with 21 points and was the only Lady Falcon in double figures.
State College has a pair of key games coming up next week, both with teams owning state championship trophies.
