State College, Pa., Feb. 11, 2003 -- The Lady Little Lions finished their regular season 21-2 with a 79-43 win over the visiting Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders.

Bishop Guilfoyle, now 16-7, led by a point after the first quarter but trailed by eight at the half.

The Lady Little Lions began their charge after halftime, outscoring the Lady Marauders 25-10 and 24-11 in the last two periods.

"I think we started out very passive," State College coach Bethany Irwin said. "It's always our defense that creates the offense, and I think the second half really showed that."

Erin McGowan came out strong for the Lady Marauders, scoring six of her eight points in the first four-and-a-half minutes.

Liz Gabrielle drove the lane for a bucket, followed by two more from Suzy Carlson, narrowing State College's deficit to one point (11-12) at the quarter break.

State College held the Lady Marauders to 10 points in the second period and scored 19 with two buckets from reserve Liz Miller and six of Nicole Scipione's 15 points, giving the Lady Little Lions a 30-22 advantage at the half.

State College scored from behind the arc three times in the third quarter with Sarah O'Shea, Miller and Carlson all sinking threes in just over a minute of play.

Bishop Guilfoyle scored half of its third-quarter points on free throws, one from Maureen Nagle and two each from Angela Greaser and Lindsay Conner.

Carlson turned a bucket into a three-point play and Gabrielle made a jump-shot with four seconds remaining, ending the third period with six of her 13 points and a 55-32 State College lead.

"Statistically, the third quarter has always been Bishop Guilfoyle's strength, so we really were concerned about that," Irwin said. "I didn't know how we were going to respond, but I'm really pleased with the way we did respond."

O'Shea scored six straight points for State College in the final eight minutes, making two buckets and a pair of free throws to finish the game with 14 points. Carlson sank another three and made a lay-up, rounding out her game-high and season-high 20 points.

"Suzy Carlson was just unstoppable in the second half," Irwin said.

Greaser nailed two from the line for the Lady Marauders in the last quarter, tying McGowan's eight points, while Connor hit a three and tossed in a free throw to finish the game with a team-high 10 points.

Lady Little Lion reserve Jessie Serafin helped boost the fourth-period lead to a final 79-43, scoring seven points and accounting for nearly a third of State College's points in the last quarter.

The J.V. Lady Little Lions ended their season at 21-0 continuing a winning streak that hit the 80-game mark with a 64-18 victory over Bishop Guilfoyle. Kelly Ashcraft led in scoring with 12 points, followed closely by Amber Yearick with 11 and Miller with 10.
